In today’s digital age, data has become one of the most valuable assets for organizations across all industries. With the vast amount of data being generated every day, it has become crucial for companies to implement effective Data managementpractices to ensure the security, accuracy, and accessibility of their data. One approach that has gained popularity in recent years is duoplistic governance, which combines the benefits of two different governance models to improve data management processes.
In a recently published blog article, I presented the results of a survey and pointed out there is hope for the data management community: more than half of the interviewed ICT community considers the funding of large ICT projects as a joint effort from the business and ICT. That is the foundation for a duopolistic governance which is crucial for modern data management.
One of the key benefits of duoplistic governance is that it helps organizations streamline their data management processes by creating clear roles and responsibilities for data stakeholders. With clearly defined roles and responsibilities, organizations can ensure that data is managed in a consistent and efficient manner, reducing the risk of errors and inconsistencies in the data.
Additionally, duopolistic governance allows organizations to take a holistic approach to data management, ensuring that data is managed in a way that aligns with the organization’s overall business objectives.
Another advantage is that it helps organizations improve data quality and integrity. By combining the principles of data governance and information governance, organizations can establish clear guidelines for data quality, security, and privacy, ensuring that data is accurate, reliable, and secure. This, in turn, helps organizations make more informed business decisions based on reliable and trustworthy data.
Lingua Franca has been promoting this concept since the beginning of this century as we learned the hard way that neither a business monarchy nor an ICT monarchy delivers the goods in data management.
Finally we described it in our book Business Analysis for Business Intelligence which is still on the market and has been translated in Chinese.
With more and more unstructured data coming in the analytical scope, this duopolistic approach is getting even more important. We are preparing a template for data governance for Large Language models which is considering more aspects in governance than ever before. Because governing context and ontologies is an order of magnitude greater in complexity than prescribing some data standards for an OLTP environment to mention the most basic exercise.
